Why you Need to Have your Teeth Scaled and Planed

Posted .

Have you ever been asked if you’d like to have your teeth scaled and planed when at a dentist’s office? Chances are you probably haven’t, because it’s a procedure included in a standard cleaning. Scaling and planing are critically important to great oral health, since it’s a process that gets rid of excess plaque.

But what is it, and why do you need to have your teeth scaled and planed? Here at E. John Moreno, DMD in Aliso Viejo, California we get that question quite often. In order to better help the rest of our patients – including you – understand why you need to have your teeth scaled and planed, we put together this blog post just for you.

What is it?
Scaling and planing is the process of removing hardened plaque – called tartar – from your teeth, and around your gum line. When plaque has the chance to build up on your teeth, it becomes too hard to remove yourself. In addition, that hardened plaque is a haven for bacteria that cause cavities and gum disease.

Why do I need it?
You’ll need scaling and planing if you have any tartar on your teeth, or near your gums. You can’t let that much bacteria sit in your mouth for too long without running the risk of infection or cavities.

It’s also too difficult to remove at home without risking damage to your teeth and gums. Our trained staff knows how to safely plane and scale your teeth, and they’ll let you know during your appointment if it’s something you need.

We want you to have the best smile possible. If you’re ready for the same thing, call us today at 949-487-9220. Dr. John Moreno and our team are here for your oral health!
