How Scaling and Root Planing Treatments Can Stabilize Gum Disease

Posted .

If your gum disease has advanced to the point that it is no longer reversible, the first action your periodontist will probably propose is a treatment called scaling and root planing. According to the Journal of Evidenced-Based Dental Practice, this treatment is the “gold standard” for patients with chronic periodontitis.

But what is it, exactly? Well, it treats one of the main symptoms of gum disease–gum recession and the effectual “pockets” or crevices created above the gumline. Scaling eliminates bacterial toxins, plaque and calculus from the pockets. Root planing levels out any rough areas on the exposed roots of your teeth, allowing your gums to grow back over the roots.

Gum disease usually means that your teeth and gums are highly sensitive. This is why Dr. John Moreno will apply a numbing agent before starting the procedure. As there are no cuts required, scaling and root planing is not considered surgery. Your recovery time will likely be neither long nor painful.

After a period of time, Dr. John Moreno will call you in for a follow-up visit to check the state of your gums. In most cases, patients’ gums will regenerate wonderfully. However, where the disease is more severe, surgical intervention may be required.

After any major treatments are finished, we continue to see you for periodic cleanings and exams. To set up a scaling and root planing or a checkup at E. John Moreno, DMD in Aliso Viejo, California, simply call 949-487-9220. Soon we’ll have you on your way to healthier and happier smile.
